Imitation is the Whitest Form of Flattery
Clarion Alley Mural Project
San Francisco, United States

Described by some as "the last bastion of true art and street culture in the Mission," the Clarion Alley Mural Project was founded by a group of volunteer street artists in 1992 and has since flourished into a colourful destination for neighbourhood residents and visitors alike.

At any given time, some 50 murals, ranging in tone from political-charged to solemn to irreverent to joyous, adorn the walls of the two-block stretch of street.

Conflicted: Adversaries in Art
Town Hall Gallery, Curated by Kent Wilson
21 April - 31 May 2015

INCLUDING: JUAN FORD

Conflicted is an exploration of ways in which art looks into the difficult relationship between art and war. Delving deeply into the nature of conflict and what lies at the heart of the human propensity to battle, the exhibition promises to take a sweeping view into what is a complex concern for all of humanity.

At a time of reflection on the ANZAC Centenary, Conflicted offers a blend of historical and contemporary investigations into the very idea of conflict. The ways in which we understand adversarial relationships, the nature of competition and battle ingrained from our childhood, and how art is used to examine such ideas is put under the microscope.

- TONY ALBERT -
Edited by Art & Australia

Art & Australia presents a comprehensive survey of the multidisciplinary oeuvre of Tony Albert, showcasing why the artist is fast becoming one of Australia’s leading figures in contemporary art. Featuring a foreword by Hetti Perkins and an in-depth interview with the artist by notable curator Maura Reilly, the book explores the complex conceptual undercurrent that pervades Albert’s work. Colour reproductions of the works, from photographs to large-scale installations, reveal the artist’s ongoing interrogation of the politics of colonisation and the flagrant injustices that are still faced by indigenous Australians today.

Sullivan+Strumpf is pleased to be exhibiting at Art Brussels for the 33rd iteration of the international fair.

Following sell-out success at Art Basel Hong Kong, Japanese-born artist, Hiromi Tango, produces evocative, highly personal neon works through her meditative art-making process of wrapping and weaving.

Exhibiting extensively in Australia and abroad, Tim Silver works across sculpture, video, photography and installation. Often made from entropic materials, such as sawdust and putty, the works begin to decompose from the moment of their assembly.

Being the only Australian gallery to be exciting at Art Brussels, Sullivan+Strumpf hopes to expose international audiences to the work of contemporary Australian artists, while enjoying continued overseas success.

RICHARD LEWER
The Custom of the Sea
St Paul Street Gallery
Auckland University of Technology

17 April - 22 May 2015

Faced with a life or death choice, what would you do? Until we find ourselves in such a situation we can't be sure what lengths we’d go to in order to stay alive.

There are many stories of survival in human history and many of them come from situations at sea. Richard Lewer’s The Custom of the Sea is a response to one such story from 1884. It is the true story of four men cast adrift after their yacht the Mignonette was shipwrecked about 1,600 miles from the Cape of Good Hope on the journey from England to Australia. After more than two weeks without food and fresh water, two of the men, Tom Dudley and Edwin Stephens, made the decision to kill and eat the unconscious fourth crew member Richard Parker so that the remaining three might survive. The third crewmember, Edmund Brooks, objected.

The title of the work comes from a custom said to be in operation at sea. In a shipwreck it is deemed acceptable for those shipwrecked to draw lots to see who will be killed and eaten so that the others may survive. It is hard to imagine that this situation was common enough at the time to become an accepted practice with its own rules. In fact the shipwrecked men from the Mingonette didn't even follow this custom of drawing straws, but as Parker was already ill they made the decision to go ahead and kill and eat him.

Lewer is interested in situations of intense personal struggle and the moral choices involved in what people will do to survive. In working with true stories of struggle and crime Lewer positions himself as a social realist artist. His work The Custom of the Sea for ST PAUL St is a large-scale wall drawing rendered with help from a group of volunteers. Lewer works with volunteers to achieve the scale within a limited time, but he is also interested in the social aspect of working with others to realise these large-scale projects. The activity of working together over several days is also a bonding exercise, and the chance to share technical skills. The final work presents a dark subject in a beautifully rendered soft and dense charcoal that creates a powerful experience for viewers.
