VALE SYDNEY BALL

07/03/2017

SYDNEY BALL
1933-2017

It is with great sadness that we announce Sydney Ball passed away peacefully in the late hours of Sunday 5 March 2017. He was 83 years old.

We are very grieved to have lost our dear friend, our great mentor and this tremendous artist. But we are also so grateful for the many years that we had together, for his wonderful exhibitions, the many fun times at his house, for his passion, generosity, and for the colour that he brought to our lives.

Syd will be greatly missed by his family, loved ones and friends, and by his students and many admirers. He will be remembered for his enormous contribution to Australian Art.

"Well for me the holy trinity of colour painting is colour, space and light. Once you've got colour and space you are well on the road to getting magnificent light. You really are."  - Sydney Ball, 2012

We celebrate Sydney Ball.

ALEX SETON
Alex Seton: The Island
Newcastle Art Gallery
1 Laman Street, Newcastle
18 Feb - 7 May

Newcastle Art Gallery presents Alex Seton: The Island, a major exhibition of Seton's work from recent years. This compelling and salient exhibition contemplates and questions Australia's role in the asylum debate. 'The Island' as a concept can be a safe place of refuge, isolated geographically and ideologically from the humanitarian challenges the world is currently grappling with. Alternatively it can take on a more sinister tone as a place deserted for those who have survived a perilous sea journey only to be marooned, stateless, detained, looking to the horizon for help.

Within the exhibition: oars, life rafts and life vests are washed up on the shores of the 'The Island'. A key work on loan from The Art Gallery of South Australia, Someone died trying to have a life like mine (2013) was first shown in the exhibition Dark Heart at the 2014 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art. This major work of art is inspired by an actual event where 28 life jackets were found on a beach of the Cocos Islands within Australian territory, the owners still remain unidentified.

RAMESH MARIO NITHIYENDRAN
In the Beginning
Ian Potter Museum, Melbourne
Until 26 Feb 2017

In The Beginning by Ramesh Mario Nithiyendran pushes the symbolic and material qualities of clay to produce iconoclastic sculptures that break the rules of the medium. Combining Hindu and Christian symbolism with the subversive imagery of internet memes, his wildly misshapen characters act as avatars through which to explore gender and eroticism, religion and popular culture, exoticism and outsider aesthetics.

SANNÉ MESTROM
Meet the Artists
MCA, Sydney
Veolia Lecture Theatre
140 George Street
The Rocks
1 Feb | 630-8 pm

Moderated by Mark Hughes, hear from Sanné Mestrom and Sally Smart on how their work expands traditional notions of painting and sculpture by incorporating fabric and found objects. In different ways, their work begins with the body and its imaginary potential.

Sometimes subversive in their use of materials, the artists will discuss how they work with materials in different combinations, exploring the relationship between viewers and objects and the importance of different histories, including art and literature, to their art-making

SYDNEY BALL
Superposition of three types
Artspace
43-51 Cowper Wharf Road
Woolloomooloo NSW 2011
Sydney
10 Feb - 17 Apr
Opens 9 Feb | 6-8 pm

Featuring newly commissioned and recent works, Superposition of three types brings together 13 living Australian artists across generations and mediums dealing broadly within the vernacular of colourist abstraction, and also features durational works of sound, movement and word that will activate the gallery at different points throughout the exhibition.

Superposition of three types resists an often-oversimplified appreciation of abstraction as purely aesthetic and acknowledges its rich avant-garde origins. The exhibition aims to highlight the continuing efficacy of practices drawing on colour and form. Works in the exhibition will engage with space and architecture, bleeding and blurring across the Artspace galleries, creating connectivity between practices and a layered, immersive environment.
